Disconnect all power

Please ensure that all power to the panel has been disconnected before doing any work on the devices.  Never connect telemetry up while the system is running.

Cable Selection

For RS485 to work effectively, it needs to use a 4 core twisted pair shielded cable.

RS485 Cable Example

Cable core Usage

Below labels the 4 cables wiring from the GSM connect unit to the power supply and to the Variable Speed Drive (VSD)

Please ensure that the RS485 data cables are in the same twisted pair. From Figure 1 above either use brown and white or yellow and green.

Note: Cables may vary in colour.

RS485 Serial Settings & Parameters

The GSM Connect comes with the following default parameters programmed. Most VSD units have the parameters below set by default.

Please ensure that your VSD communication settings correctly represent these. Drive specific settings are recorded below. In Group F15 for the Frecon FR300 series

Antenna Placement

The placement of the GSM antenna is crucial to successful operation of the system. The better the signal the more stable & reliable connection the modem will have.

  • The GSM antenna must be mounted outside the enclosure and preferably as high up as possible away from hard surfaces.
  • The GSM antenna cannot be mounted inside of any metal enclosure as this will act as faraday cage and prevent signal from reaching it.
  • The higher up the GSM antenna can be the better chance of finding a stronger signal.
  • Keep vandalism or and physical damage from animas etc. in mind when placing the antenna.

VSD Wiring Instructions

 Cable Connection

One the Frecon VSD wire the WHITE wire into position (7) (485+) on the upper terminal block and wire the BLUE wire into position (8)(485-)

Connection with RS485

The following points must be observed for the connection of the device using the RS485 interface:

  • It is recommended the use of a shielded cable with a twisted pair of wires
  • It is recommended that the cable has one more wire for the connection of the reference signal (GND). In case the cable does not have the additional wire, then the GND signal must be left disconnected.
  • The cable must be laid separately ( and as far away as possible) from the power cables.
  • All the network devices must be properly grounded, preferably at the same ground connection. The cable shield must also be grounded.

Communication Parameters

The communication parameters for the Frecon VSD’s are all grouped in F15 please see table 3 below for outline of parameters and codes.

Running Parameters

In order to remotely control the drive, one needs to make some small changes to the running parameters on the drive. Please note this is optional.

Installation

Physical Install

  • Secure both the Frecon VSD and the modem into the enclosure.
  • Ensure that the connection screws are tightly fastened.

Connecting the RS 485

  1. Starting with the RS485 connection. (Blue and White Cables)
  2. Twist the length of cable to be used around itself to form a braid to minimize interference in communication. On the top end of the modem Wire the WHITE wire into (A) and the BLUE wire into (B)

3.On the Frecon VSD wire the WHITE wire into position (7)(485+) on the upper terminal block and wire the BLUE wire into position (8)(485-)

Connecting The Power

The modem unit runs on 12-24v DC and will draw this power from the Frecon VSD 24v supply.

(Note: do not plug the modem into AC power or a different dc power source)

  1. On the Modem, wire the Red wire into the positive (+) and the BLACK wire into the negative (–) terminals.

2.Then on the Frecon VSD wire the RED (+) into Position 1 (+24V) on the lower terminal block.
Wire the BLACK (–) wire into position 3 (GND) on the lower terminal block.

VSD Settings & Parameters

The modem is programmed to work with the VSD out of the box, that is if the VSD Communication settings are still default. To double check the communication settings see table below:

Once these parameters have been defaulted, the device stats should start showing up on the portal dashboard.

From the portal one can the reprogram the VSD to allow remote control.
